Our dear friend and artist Michael Strang sadly passed away in 2021. We are working closely with his family and are honoured as a gallery to continue to represent his work. As one of the first artists to join the Summerhouse when we opened in 2011, his beautiful paintings feel very much part of all we do, and it is a pleasure to have them gracing our walls. 

Michael Strang was one of England’s best-loved painters, with work exhibited in private collections both in the UK and internationally. A young Michael Strang was a student at both Camberwell and Wimbledon in the golden years of 1968–73, graduating with a BA with Honours. Primarily an oil painter who has continually been celebrated for his ability to capture the magic of a country scene, Michael's plein air seascapes of Porthmeor beach were included in the Tate’s ‘Century of Images’ exhibition in 1995, which catapulted him into recognition as a modern day master of romantic impressionism. His work has since been included in many prestigious collections, including The Royal Academy and Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum. 

We were delighted to hold a retrospective show of over 30 of Michael’s works here at The Summerhouse, called ‘A Painting is but a Prayer’. The show took place in April 2024 and was a true celebration of the life and work of Michael Strang.
