Alchemy: jake boex

In this collection I aim to convey the heart of Alchemy, both outer and inner transformation, from base metal to gold and from heavy emotions to lighter states of being.

Working with clay and minerals connects elements from the ground up, earth water fire and air merge and transform creating space and form. Ceramics is, in a sense, the heart of alchemy, the earliest physical transformation of mud to functional forms by hand and fire. 

Ceramics also allows the inner aspect to be conveyed, with form texture and tone connecting us to our feelings and emotions. Words on the base of each piece point to this connection, ‘openness’ allowing merging and transformation to occur, shifting from heavy to lighter states. These principles have shaped World views and religious frameworks resonating throughout the cultural landscapes of the Egyptians and Greeks to mysticism and yogic practices.
