Driven by a love of colour, materials and process, I create new and imagined landscapes.
Through photography and film I record snapshots that captivate me. Contrasts and curiosities in both familiar and unknown places. I use these images as reference, and often integrate them directly with collage and drawing when working on paper.
When painting, I use vast layered washes of oil, almost like watercolour. Colours collide and melt together. In direct reference to my works on paper, I add marks; obscuring, removing and reworking. Geometric shapes of the built environment contrast with more organic forms. Figurative references emerge between abstracted layers. I respond instinctively to each layer with the next: impressions of a past encounter, or the outline of something that may or may not have been.
The process seems to reflect the nature of memory. And in reshaping my experiences to create something completely fresh, I like the idea that art can be an escape from nostalgia.
TO SUBMIT WORK TO THE SUMMERHOUSE GALLERY
Here at The Summerhouse we love to support both established and new, up and coming artists with an affinity to Cornwall. We do recieve a very large volume of submissions, and although we take care to view every artists work, it is very difficult to discuss work with every single artist who gets in touch.
Please send us a selection of work which you feel best represents you, along with an artists statement and a list of other galleries which represent your work if applicable. You can email this to firstname.lastname@example.org or post to our address, with contact details (email or telephone) which we can reach you via should your application be successful.
We look forward to hearing from you.
