Kate Richardson is a self-taught artist, living and working in Penwith, Cornwall.
I dont have to be in a particular mood to paint- although sometimes Im able to procrastinate all day- but my most successful pieces are born from angst or elation.
I am curious about the direction of my style and gain an immeasurable satisfaction from the journey. This adventure has lead me from large stormy seascapes with lonely little boats, through colourful rock faces, springtime yellow flowers and cliff tops, to little Cornish hedgerows and landscapes. I never know where it will lead until I feel I am drawn to a particular subject or medium for a while and realize my style has taken another twist or turn.
My favourite tool for large canvases is a 2 soft blender brush, trimmed to a ¾ length, which allows me to apply and blend large amounts of paint quickly and freely. For smaller work I use a painting knife to build up thick layers of oil paint made buttery with refined linseed oil.
People have often commented that they see emotion in my work, which I take, as a great compliment. Personally, if I dont see some sort of sentiment or personality in a painting- if it has no soul then I walk on."
Kates work has recently evolved into an exploration of the abstract- a unique expression of freedom bound by minimal use of colour yet boundless in its imagination. Each original piece is uncompromised and unlimited. Complex, textured shades support geometry without borders. Shapes and colours emerge and fade with gentle subtlety, inspired by the infinite sub-conscious mind, providing compelling drama.
Her work carries an emotional element which reflects her description of the process of painting as simultaneously cathartic, meditative, explorative and exhilarating.
TO SUBMIT WORK TO THE SUMMERHOUSE GALLERY
Here at The Summerhouse we love to support both established and new, up and coming artists with an affinity to Cornwall. We do recieve a very large volume of submissions, and although we take care to view every artists work, it is very difficult to discuss work with every single artist who gets in touch.
Please send us a selection of work which you feel best represents you, along with an artists statement and a list of other galleries which represent your work if applicable. You can email this to email@example.com or post to our address, with contact details (email or telephone) which we can reach you via should your application be successful.
We look forward to hearing from you.
